Blackjack - or also known as twenty one, was first mentioned in Spanish literature. The first game, predecessor of blackjack, called twenty one (ventiuna in Spanish) is of unknown origin. It was first mentioned by a famous Spanish writer of Don Quixote Miguel de Cervantes in one of his novels, which was written between 1601 and 1602. You see, Miguel de Cervantes was a gambler himself, and in his novels he claimed that people of Castilia (a region in north Spain) began to play this game, since the beginning of 17th century or even earlier!
Later, for centuries this game traveled through all of the Europe, and left its tracks in history of Spain and France.
When blackjack was first introduced to US auditory it was still called twenty one. First casinos offered bonuses for some of the combinations to make the game more interesting for gamblers. One of those combinations consisted of jack and ace of spades. This combination was called blackjack and this name just stuck to the game.
